The Wife Master

PLOT

"The Wife Master" is a Cambodian comedy about two opposing American dreams.

Dream 1) to come to this country, pursue a career and wealth, regardless of you are.

Dream 2) to do nothing and live at home as long as possible.

These two dreams collide in "The Wife Master", providing the basis for cataclysmic comedy.

Bora is a 40 year old gay man who has an incredible brain but chooses to do nothing with it -- except memorize celebrity birthdays. He doesn't have a job or a future. He lives at home. But one day, his aunt kicks him out.

Bora is then given a deal from a sleazy uncle. Marry an immigrant and I will you give you $10,000. Bora has no choice. He accepts. Now, Bora must live with Maly: a woman. She works in a sweatshop all day and cooks and cleans for Bora.

But one day, Maly also wonders what Bora does? Bora won't be spoken to this way. When he complains to his sleazy uncle, the uncle provides a second wife, Boramey. But this wife is out of control. Here, Bora will face his biggest challenge.

DIRECTOR

Mich Medvedoff wanted to make a feature film about a world you don't see often. When she met Bora Soth, she desired to make a film with him. Bora had a charisma and way of speaking that was very unique. Whether he spoke English or Khmer. Medvedoff was interested in making a film about Bora's world -- and that led to the Khmer flavor she later found.

She first made a 15 minutes documentary about Bora called "Private Eye Candy." After seeing Bora's charisma, she wanted to make a feature film with him -- and that became "The Wife Master."

Medvedoff had to go into the Khmer community to find the actors for "The Wife Master." Maly Seng (who plays Maly) and Nita Pich (who plays the aunt) work in a sweat shop in real life. Sophaline Mao works in sales in the Bay Area. Jannie Lam and Beeh Keo were students at Cal State Long Beach. Medvedoff wanted real Khmer people for the film to create a world that Western audiences never see. She wanted to create a comedy like "Borat" but with the style of Italian Neorealism like in "The Bicyle Thief."

PRODUCTION

Mich Medvedoff has another job, so she had to make the movie in her spare time for over a year. People have helped tremendously. Most recently, Andrew Troy, who did sound on the Oscar film, "The Fighter," agreed to do the sound after falling in love with the film.

"The Wife Master" will need all the help it can get. It is a small, unique movie that Western audiences are not used to. More films like "The Wife Master" can be made if it is successful. Please watch the trailer and tell your friends and family about "The Wife Master".

Wonderful idea, Hero. How bout an exclusive limited-time online screening sometime in the future for our community?

Hi, Sarith --

The movie is in it's final stages of post production and will be ready to screen at festivals and beyond by the end of summer. We can't wait to share it with everyone.
